What may be different about Journey Groups than other discussion groups you have attended?
Most people have never experienced anything like a Journey Group before.
It is unique in the following ways:
- it is not principally a group coming together for warm friendship, although this happens, instead its focus is on encountering God in your daily life and experiencing more of His presence
- it is not like a book club where interesting ideas are discussed but more like a hikers club where we share what we experienced this week and where we are going next week
- it is not a closed group, instead we are interested in having anyone join us for discussion and interaction regardless of where they are on their personal journey to get to know God
What would a typical Journey group do?
Typically we will meet in groups of 8-12 people during the week in a group member’s home for a meal or dessert. Times are flexible, but groups typically begin around 6:00pm or 6:30pm and continue until around 9:00pm.
Normally we will start with some time of talking to God about the week and our lives.
Then each person will have an opportunity to share their encounter with God the last week. This may come from some of the exercises assigned the last week or it may come as you share from your journal some of your experiences with Jesus. There will also be a time of learning something new about how to make progress.
Here some common activities
- sharing your experience with God’s power and love showing up in daily events that week
- sharing results from assigned exercises meant to draw you closer to God
- a meal/dessert together enjoying getting to know the people in your group
- discussion on how to overcome obstacles and make greater progress
- praise/worship of the King, and prayer for needs of group members
